Golf and the Game of Life
“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots — but you have to play the ball where it lies.” Bobby Jones
Although an amateur golfer, Bobby Jones helped design the Augusta National Golf Club and co-founded the Masters Tournament. His famous quote addresses the parallels of golf and life. Whether you are a golfer or not, you may find several character traits that are required for a life of success are also evident and fine-tuned as one pursues the game of golf.
Honesty
Golf is a game of honesty. Because many of your shots are made on your own and no one is actually watching your every shot, you are your own rules official. You may need to apply a penalty to yourself, but in the end that is the rule, and you must follow them no matter haw hard that is to do. Just as in life, you cannot get ahead by cheating.
Patience
Often, we hear the phrase ‘patience is a virtue’ and it turns out that is the case in both life and golf. Golf teaches players how to have patience and thus improve their game. If you are impatient, you can learn patience through playing golf. And having a sense of patience in life is a true characteristic that will help you to become mature and wise.
Focus
You cannot multitask when you play golf. Focus is required. To improve your playing skills, you must focus. Learning to maintain your attention for 18 holes can help teach you to become patient in life too. The power of focus allows us to be more productive overall in life.
So, if you are interested in seeing how these characteristics come to life in the game, we invite you to join us on Thursday, May 20. The Caswell County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Bright Leaf Classic Golf Tournament at the Caswell Pines Golf Club and all are invited to participate. Lunch is at noon and there is a shotgun start at 1:00 pm. $60 per player/$240 per team of four. Proceeds will provide funds for the Chamber to provide programming to our small business community.
